KUALA LUMPUR ― Discussions about Pakatan Harapan’s prime ministerial candidate should be conducted privately to prevent misunderstandings, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president said when internal issues like this are deliberated openly, it confuses voters which will cause them to lose faith in the coalition.
“It is better for matters of this sort… not to be discussed openly. It creates a lot of misunderstanding or confusion. It also gives the impression that the Opposition is not united,” Muhyiddin said at a press conference here.
But the former deputy prime minister also acknowledged a need for the four-party pact to discuss and resolve its internal conflicts before the upcoming general elections.
“It is better if we trash it out now. It will give a strong signal to the electorate,” the Pagoh MP said.
He warned fellow Opposition parties to prioritise the interests of the people ahead instead of their own in deciding Pakatan Harapan’s designated prime ministerial candidate.
“You must put the importance of the people and country ahead of your own parties. Do not be selfish on the interest of respective parties,” Muhyiddin said without naming anyone or party.
Discord over Pakatan’s choice for PM started last month when PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad refused to display placards endorsing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the “seventh prime minister” during PKR’s annual assembly, and later confirmed that he did not support his former deputy for the post.
Anwar, the PKR de facto leader, is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for sodomy, and the plan to make him prime minister — dubbed the “Kajang Move 2.0” — involves installing his wife and the party president, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as a placeholder prime minister.
It would also require Anwar to somehow obtain a royal pardon, which would then remove his disqualification to contest the by-election that he must win in order to be able to hold the post.
