BAD NEWS FOR VOTERS: IT’S ANWAR NOT DR M BUT PAKATAN DARE NOT SAY IT FOR FEAR OF LOSING FED-UP VOTERS’ SUPPORT: ‘PKR HAS ITS MAN FOR THE JOB & THERE’S SUPPORT FROM ANOTHER PARTY’ – SAIFUDDIN
FAILING to name an interim prime minister candidate does not mean that Pakatan Harapan is crumbling, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said today.
Azmin said PH would only be ready to discuss the matter when the people have given the coalition their support and the mandate to govern.
“The PH leadership is in discussions and we have our priorities.
“We want to make sure the PH structure is in order and give focus on getting ready for the coming general election,” he told reporters at a book launch in Shah Alam today.
PH secretary Saifuddin Abdullah shared the same view and now is not the time to announce who is the PM candidate, even though everyone knew who that is.
“We have not discussed in detail. We know who the candidate is because PKR has its man for the job, and there is support from another component party.
“We know it. The whole world knows it. But we have not reached the stage (to announce the candidate),” he said.
To date, PH had been indecisive over who to offer as prime minister-designate and who would lead the coalition in the coming polls.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has been unwilling to accept PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as PH’s candidate for prime minister.
Its chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister for 22 years from 1981 to 2003, has of late offered to return to his old job if PH needed him to.
Bersatu’s reluctance to accept Anwar as the candidate for prime minister was speculated as the reason why a PH meeting last Friday ended without a press conference.
Like Azmin, Saifuddin said PH wanted to complete its election manifesto first.
“The meeting discussed many things, including people issues, current issues and the coalition’s registration,” he said.
He also said this coming Friday’s presidential council meeting might be able to resolve candidacy matters and address current issues like the latest crisis involving Felda Global Ventures (FGV).
“PH is still functioning as a political coalition,” Saifuddin said.
Yesterday, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng also said PH was intact, denying talks of an internal spat over the prime minister candidate issue.
He also maintained that DAP’s choice for prime minister was Anwar, if PH successfully took over Putrajaya.
